First Day of Ballet

My little ballerina, Kiah.

Wednesday September 10th was her first class, even though she has been walking on her toes since her steps began. Perhaps it has been her calling all along to be a prima ballerina. But don't tell her that... she has her mind set on becoming an astronaut. Perhaps she could make her debut in the ballet classic Nutcracker Apollo 13.

Perhaps not. :-/

A year ago we were making long drives once a week to visit an orthopedic pediatrician. Every week Kiah's little feet were wrapped in casts from her toes to her knees in order to stretch her achilles tendon. Six sets of casts later and she was as flat footed as a duck... for about a month, but at least she had full range of motion. The doctor actually suggested ballet for stretching and flexibility. Otherwise botox is the next step and then ballet would be out for sure.

We had everything we needed. The tights, the leatard, the bun... we still needed ballet slippers but I wanted to be sure she liked it before committing to expensive shoes. I love this picture below. It looks like a classic painting to me.

Her first words when we got into the car were, "Mommy I love ballet." Really? Hmmm... ok, shoes. Thanks to a tip from one of the other ballet moms we were headed to Payless Shoes to get a pair of ballet slippers for $16.99. I love Payless.

Here she is hiding her footsies from my view because she is not trying on ballet slippers... uh huh... she is trying on a pair of four inch hot pink heels... which she walked all to well in. Oh dear.

Not having had a daughter, I missed all this. I remember Ballet lessons for myself though and I loved it. For a big, tall girl I remember feeling so graceful. Good memory!
Hope this helps your daughters legs and feet.

Ok, here is where its gonna get a little more wierd ... my little ballerina walks on her toes all the time too! She has ataxic cerebral palsy and gets stability from walking on her toes. She has been in braces all summer trying to get her to walk flat footed. We've seen some progress and thankfully she has never had any problems with her heel cord being too tight.
Anyways, nice to meet you!!

Oh the memories . . . (lilting tune wafts in the background).

We graduated from ballet slippers to harps (trust me ... ballet was CHEAPER).

Miss Kiah is a beautiful ballerina. I hope we get windof any recitals that come fluttering into the picture (HINT!) ; )

Love stopping by to peek in the windows and smile.

We also put my daughter into ballet last year for therapy after she broke her leg. I am so glad I did! She learned grace, poise and balance and had a great time doing it. I am certain your daughter will feel the same.

What a beautiful ballerina! And I have to say, I can already tell she has fabulous taste in shoes! :p Auntie Julie might just have to send her a little high-heeled something when she gets a bit older.

Oh, this is such a sweet post. When I was a little girl, I read a book about a girl who danced ballet to strengthen her legs. I never forgot that book. My oldest danced ballet for many, many years. The shoes--they get more expensive! But it's worth it.
